1968
A European First
The Englishman received a frosty reception from some of the more parochial US players. Despite the narrow-minded few, Jacklin fared well and won the Jacksonville Open of 1968.
1969
The Open Champion
In 1969, Tony Jacklin won The Open Championship at Royal Lytham & St Annes. It was a historic victory, as he became the first British player to win The Open since 1934. The win sparked renewed interest in golf in Britain and established Jacklin as a national sporting hero.
1970
US Open Champion
In 1970, Jacklin claimed the US Open title at Hazeltine National Golf Club. He won by an impressive seven strokes, one of the largest winning margins in the tournament’s history. With this victory, he became the first golfer to win The Open Championship and the US Open in consecutive years.
1985
Ryder Cup Victory
As captain of the European team, Jacklin led Europe to a famous Ryder Cup victory in 1985 on American soil. It was the first time Europe had ever won the Ryder Cup in the United States. The triumph marked a turning point and helped usher in a new era of European success.
2002 & Now
Hall of Fame & Jacklin Golf
In 2002, Tony Jacklin was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. The honor recognized both his achievements as a player and his lasting impact as a Ryder Cup captain. Jacklin is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in European golf history.
